WOLVERINE AND METALLICA SCHOLARS PARTNER TO RELEASE TWO NEW METALLICA-INSPIRED BOOTS, PROVIDE FUNDING TO TRADE PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

100% of the proceeds from the Wolverine x Metallica Scholars collaboration boots will be used to educate trade students through the Metallica Scholars Initiative

ROCKFORD, Mich., August 11, 2020 – Wolverine, the 137 year old boot brand, and Metallica’s nonprofit All Within My Hands (AWMH) are setting out on a different type of U.S. tour to help build the future American workforce. United by the same core mission, Wolverine and AWMH are providing trade school  students scholarship funding, while teaming up to launch two special edition boots inspired by the legendary rock band. The Metallica Scholars 1000 Mile Axel and Hellcat UltraSpring™ boots are available for pre-order starting today, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting AWMH to further support the skilled trades.

“Wolverine shares the same vision that we had when creating the Metallica Scholars Initiative – that it’s incredibly important to create and sustain a strong and resilient American workforce. AWMH is our way of giving back and building future generations,” said Metallica guitarist James Hetfield. “More importantly, we are helping these students achieve their dreams and transform their lives through the workforce education programs offered at community colleges all across the country.”

The Wolverine x Metallica Scholars 1000 Mile Axel  limited-edition boot is based on the popular Wolverine 1000 Mile boot silhouette with several Metallica-inspired features including a Metallica Key logo-inspired metal heel plate, an All Within My Hands metal toe kicker, metal-tipped laces and a metal guitar pick tag. The boot is made in the USA and uses Chicago-based Horween Chromexcel leather, silver hardware and a classic Vibram® lugged outsole.

The Wolverine x Metallica Scholars Hellcat UltraSpring™ boot combines traditional work boot durability with the modern performance of Wolverine UltraSpring™ cushioning. The boot has its own unique Metallica Scholars-inspired features – a custom molded Metallica Key logo stitched on the boot and a custom metal ‘Metallica Scholars’ guitar pick tag.

The partnership between Wolverine and AWMH will benefit three exceptional community college trade programs across the country – Grand Rapids Community College (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Lone Star College (Houston, Texas) and WSU Tech (Wichita, Kansas), each receiving a $100,000 joint grant from Wolverine and Metallica Scholars, and Wolverine boots to help students get started in their career.

“Wolverine is committed to supporting the next generation of the American workforce, and for the past six years we have focused on closing the skills gap through our Project Bootstrap initiative,” said Tom Kennedy, global brand president for Wolverine. “We believe the best way to do that is to start with education. By ensuring community colleges and trade programs across the country have the resources they need, we can support students who are choosing to join the skilled trades and together be one step closer to closing the gap.”

Both boots are available exclusively on Wolverine.com, with 100% of the proceeds from boot sales donated directly to the Metallica Scholars Initiative to provide funding for 2021 Metallica Scholars recipients. To preorder, visit Wolverine.com/Metallica. Pre-order fulfillment and live sales begin on August 26. Wolverine introduces limited edition 1000 Mile x Sword & Plough boot to benefit Operation FINALLY HOME

Rockford, Mich. (Nov. 5, 2019) – Wolverine, the maker of quality footwear and apparel for over 135 years, is celebrating and supporting veterans with the launch of the limited-edition 1000 Mile x Sword & Plough Veterans Day boot. Wolverine will donate 100% of the limited-edition boot proceeds from November 5-12 to Operation FINALLY HOME, a non-profit organization that builds mortgage free homes for veterans. The boot will be available exclusively on wolverine.com starting November 5, 2019.

“Working with Sword & Plough to create this one-of-a-kind boot that supports veterans through Operation FINALLY HOME is a small token of appreciation and a way that we can celebrate people who have served for our country,” said Andrew Shripka, vice president of marketing for Wolverine. “We are proud to have two great partners in this launch who share our value of supporting people who build the future they want.”

Operation FINALLY HOME is a national nonprofit organization that was founded in 2005 with the goal of addressing one of the most pressing needs of returning troops: a home to call their own. Their mission is to provide custom-built, mortgage-free homes to wounded, ill and injured veterans, the widows of fallen and their families, creating a solid foundation for them to move forward in their lives. Operation FINALLY HOME partners with corporate sponsors, builder associations, builders, developers, individual contributors and volunteers in local communities across the United States to accomplish their mission.

“Operation FINALLY HOME is blessed to have such great support from Wolverine and Sword & Plough.  We have worked separately with these organizations in the past, so this has been a wonderful collaboration,” said Rusty Carroll, Executive Director at Operation FINALLY HOME. “We are grateful that they share our desire to support our mission to honor heroes with homes.”

“The Sword & Plough team is thrilled to partner with Wolverine to support Operation FINALLY HOME and its impactful mission,” said Emily Núñez Cavness, Co-founder and CEO of Sword & Plough, Former U.S. Army Captain. “As a veteran, I appreciate that this Made in USA product honors those who have served through the boot’s traditional military style and use of repurposed shelter half tent material.”

The limited-edition Wolverine 1000 Mile x Sword & Plough boot is handcrafted in the USA paying homage to traditional military boot style and those who have served in them.  Based on the Original 1000 Mile boot pattern from 1914, the limited-edition boot features Horween Natural Marine flesh-out coyote leather and incorporates repurposed military tent fabric from Sword & Plough. Sword & Plough is a veteran-owned, social impact fashion brand that donates 10% of profits to veteran organizations while empowering and employing veterans throughout the process.

Marine boots in World War II were made with the same Natural Marine leather, designed to be used flesh side out because the material was soft enough that the boots could be worn without socks. This was highly advantageous for Marines in desert areas as they were able to easily empty their boots of sand, reducing blisters and increasing comfort. The collaboration boot uses Goodyear Welt construction which was invented nearly 150 years ago and is considered one of the finest methods of shoemaking due to its durability, flexibility and resole-able properties. A Vibram® Pittsburgh outsole, speed hooks and full coyote laces complete the look of a military inspired boot with contemporary styling.

The limited-edition 1000 Mile x Sword & Plough boot is available exclusively on wolverine.com starting on November 5. 100% of proceeds from this boot from November 5 to 12, 2019 will be donated to Operation FINALLY HOME. Wolverine also has Troop ID which offers veterans a discount on all wolverine.com purchases.

Wolverine Aims to Close Skills Gap by Proving a Job in the Trades is Next Generation’s Dream Job

New survey shows 65% of the “next-gen workforce” worries they’ll need to choose between following their passions and making a living

ROCKFORD, Mich., Oct. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Millions of skilled trades jobs currently sit empty, in large part because of low awareness and misconceptions. At the same time, 72% percent of the next-generation workforce says they don’t want a desk job. The insight was uncovered as part of the second annual survey1 commissioned by Wolverine, the Michigan-based footwear and apparel company, to quantify year-over-year trends and perceptions of the skilled trades.

Wolverine’s purpose is to support people who forge their own path and the brand is on a mission to bring awareness to the skilled trades by proving that a job in the trades can be anyone’s dream job. Roles in the trades offer the qualities ranked as most important for young people in their future jobs:

  • Doing something I’m passionate about (94%)
  • Being able to get a job quickly after school/training (90%)
  • Doing something that will have a lasting impact (88%)
  • Having opportunities to be creative (83%)

“Not knowing enough about the skilled trades is a large barrier for why people aren’t choosing this career path,” said Andrew Shripka, vice president of marketing for Wolverine. “But the reality is that these jobs offer exactly what today’s young people are looking for. They can get out from behind a desk and find success where the work they are doing is making a lasting, meaningful impact.”

However, 65% still worry they’ll need to choose between following their passions and making a living. That’s why Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap enters its fifth year focused on eliminating stereotypes and showing how things you’re passionate about can found in trades careers.

In partnership with Manhattan’s soon-to-open Torch & Crown Brewing Company, Wolverine is proving how trade jobs are dream jobs with its newest Team Wolverine members, announced last night at a sneak peek of Torch & Crown:

  • Mike Betros (Tinton Falls, New Jersey): Mike took the skills he learned in automotive trade school and went on to follow his passion crafting a rewarding career in brewing. From brewing beer to installing vats to managing the brewery’s entire flow — for Mike, there’s never a dull moment.
  • Michelle Gooding (Parma, Idaho): Michelle ditched her 9-to-5 behind a desk and returned to her family farm to reconnect with the physical and mental work she loves. Together with her sisters, she’s taken their hops farming business to new heights.
  • Shane McConnell (Sommerville, Massachusetts): The trades led Shane down many different roads. But it’s his job as draft technician installing tap systems at Modern Draught that allows him to pour his heart into every restaurant and bar, establishing him as one of the coolest Draft Techs around.

As the new faces of the Wolverine brand, each Team Wolverine member was also surprised with $15,000 during the signing event, to put toward facilitating their success at work.

“Mike, Michelle and Shane are pursuing their dreams through their jobs, and each has found the flexibility and opportunity to create the life they wanted through the trades,” said Shripka. “At Wolverine, we believe this crew can tackle anything with their hard work and tenacious spirit. We’re honored to call them Team Wolverine, as they take the same pride in their work that we do in supporting them.”

In addition to providing the inspiration to follow their dreams, Wolverine is also helping facilitate Gen Z’s entry into the trades. Wolverine partnered with Torch & Crown to create Lace ‘Em Up Lager, a beer to support the skilled trades. Wolverine is matching the collaboration beer sales with a donation of up to $50,000 to the mikeroweWORKS scholarship foundation to encourage the next generation of skilled trades workers. The Lace ‘Em Up Lager is available now in cans where Torch & Crown is sold and will be available on tap at the brewery when it opens later this fall.

Founded in 2014, Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap celebrates and supports the women and men who keep our country running through their expert skills and strong work ethic. While some of the root causes of the skills gap are low awareness of and misconceptions about the trades, there has been positive movement on key measures according to this year’s survey, including:

  • In 2018, 69% of those surveyed indicated they were not familiar with careers in the skilled trades; in 2019, that figure dropped to 66%. Although not significant, it suggests a downward trend.
  • When asked why members of the next-gen workforce have not considered the trades more strongly, 39% said they just do not know enough about it compared to 45% in 2018 — a significant difference.

What does today’s dream job look like?

72% of the next-generation workforce say they wouldn’t be happy sitting at a desk all day, but only 7% of those who have decided on a career path will pursue the trades.

When asked about their future careers, the next generation knows what they are looking for. Students rated the following as important:

  • The freedom to do what they want, when they want: Flexible work hours (84%) and time to pursue other hobbies (86%).
  • Excitement on the job: Doing something different every day (66%).
  • Freedom to express themselves and make their mark: The opportunity to be creative (83%) and doing something that makes a lasting impact (88%).
  • A career that stands out: Having a job that’s considered “cool” (51%).
  • Additionally, they want autonomy in their career. 69% agree they want to be their own boss.

But 65% worry they’ll need to choose between following their passion and making a living.

Although many careers in the skilled trades offer these benefits, they’re not in today’s consideration set:

  • Two-thirds of students are not familiar with careers in the skilled trades, with only 7% of those who have decided on a career path will pursue the trades.
  • They are more than twice as likely to pursue a career in business over one in the trades
  • Students still associate the trades with traditional trades jobs – like construction (58%) – but they’re interested in pursuing a non-traditional career path (56%)

Millions of skilled trades jobs currently sit empty, in large part because of low awareness and misconceptions. Wolverine is on a mission to combat those stereotypes and prove that a job in the trades is the next-generation workforce’s dream job. That’s why Wolverine is showcasing just how “cool” the trades can be with its new Team Wolverine members.

Wolverine commissioned a 10-minute online survey among 1,000 high-school students aged 16-18 to gauge perceptions of the skilled trades. The margin of error for this sample is +/- 3 percent at the 95% confidence interval. The survey was fielded in September 2019.

Nashville carpenter Nolee Anderson wants young women to understand they have a career path available to them through the skilled trades. On May 31, Anderson launches JOIST, a local organization designed to provide young women with opportunities to discover the excitement that comes with trade work in a safe and encouraging environment.

The launch of JOIST is supported by Wolverine, the Michigan-based footwear and apparel company known for making durable work boots for more than 135 years. In 2018 Nolee joined Team Wolverine as an ambassador to champion America’s skilled trade workers.

“We’ve been working with Nolee over the past year through Team Wolverine and her commitment to not only pursuing her own career, but also helping the next generation discover how fulfilling trades jobs can be is something Wolverine is thrilled and honored to support through the launch of JOIST,” said Andrew Shripka, vice president of marketing for Wolverine.

With only 9 percent of high school students considering a career in the trades, JOIST aims to align with the mission of Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap and equip young women with basic trade skills and inspiration to consider trades work as a viable career path.

“I really found myself when I realized the options available to me with a career as a carpenter,” Anderson said. “Since joining Team Wolverine I’ve been able to see beyond my own career and give a voice to this industry and the incredible opportunities it can offer.”

Today’s launch event will be a free, day-long workshop hosted by Wolverine where local Nashville tradeswomen will mentor and teach girls ages 13–18 about different career paths in the skilled trades. The attendees will learn safety skills  and introductory training into basic hand and power tools before taking part in a hands-on activity, building picnic tables for local non-profit The Nashville Food Project.

“I’m very excited to be launching JOIST here in Nashville to teach young girls that they can do anything they set their mind to,” said Anderson. “It’s a program I wish would have existed when I was growing up.”

JOIST launches Friday, May 31 in Nashville, TN at Fort Houston with Wolverine and local retailer French’s Boots —additional events in the area will be forthcoming. Learn more about Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap at Wolverine.com/ProjectBootstrap.

If you’re waiting to purchase, don’t wait any longer. This is the winter boot you’re going to want and need for this holiday season.

In the 2019 Outside Magazine Winter Buyer’s Guide, the Arctic Grip 1000 Mile was selected as the best aprés shoes, saying:

“The Michigan-made 1000 Mile line has been a standard since the 1910s. This year’s Arctic boot trades the general-issue smooth sole for Vibram, then adds a waterproof Gore-Tex liner and treated leather (though you’ll want to wear thick socks, as it’s light on insulation). An already legendary boot gets a winter makeover.”

Additionally, in Men’s Health, the 1000 MIle Arctic was featured in the article “11 of the Best gifts to Buy for Your Significant Other.” They said:

“This year, Wolverine released its most iconic all-leather boot with a high-tech Vibram sole designed to prevent slipping on wet ice. You have to feel it to believe how well it works, but the upshot is that the guy wearing these to work is less likely to ruin his commute by taking a spill in the office parking lot.”

With Only 9 Percent of High School Students Pursuing Careers in the Trades, Wolverine Signs ‘Team Wolverine’ to Champion America’s Skilled Trade Workers

Wolverine, the Michigan-based footwear and apparel company, will sponsor three up-and-coming trade workers— a trim carpenter, apprentice electrician and timber framer— to help start their careers while also elevating perceptions of the trades

NEW YORK (Nov. 14, 2018) – A new Wolverine survey revealed that only nine percent of young people are entering the skilled trades, a reality that could slow the construction of America’s homes, roads, and buildings, and ultimately impact the country’s growing population. With more than six million unfilled U.S. jobs and less young people joining the trades, America is facing a “skills gap” where there are more skilled jobs available than qualified people to fill them.

Wolverine, known for making durable work boots for more than 135 years, is raising awareness for the trades as an attractive career path with their Project Bootstrap program. While originally visiting jobs sites and apprentice schools to thank those committed to the trades, this year Wolverine signed three up-and-coming trade workers from across the country to “Team Wolverine.” In addition to being the faces of the brand, Team Wolverine attended a signing day event on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in New York City with Mike Rowe.

The members of Team Wolverine include:

  • Nolee Anderson (Nashville, Tennessee): Nolee is a trim carpenter, mikeroweWORKS scholarship recipient, and founder of GRIT, a program that mentors young girls interested in the trades.
  • Hunter Allums (New Orleans, Louisiana): Hunter is an apprentice electrician whose interest in the trades began when he was introduced to unCommon Construction, a New Orleans non-profit that helps high school students learn real-world technical skills.
  • Andrew Lacy (Charleston, South Carolina): Andrew is a veteran who went back to school to attend the American College of Building Arts and become a timber framer.

“Supporting the skilled trades has always been important to us. Nolee, Andrew and Hunter represent the drive, grit and work ethic of those in the trades,” said Andrew Shripka, vice president of marketing for Wolverine. “We are committed to championing Team Wolverine this year and hope to inspire others to join them in 2019.”

Mike Rowe, best known as the executive producer and host of Dirty Jobs and CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, attended and spoke at the event about society’s dysfunctional relationship with work and the belief that a four-year degree is the only path for most people.

“We know that America is facing a shortage of skilled trade workers—an issue that will only continue to grow if we don’t correct the misperceptions about life in the trades,” said Rowe. “Initiatives like Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap help show young people that the career values they want are readily available through the trades.”

The event featured interactive art installations that highlighted additional skills gap statistics from Wolverine’s survey, which included:

  • 69 percent of the high school students surveyed indicated that they are not familiar with careers in the skilled trades. Among those who were familiar, only 7 percent are very familiar.
  • When asked why high school students haven’t considered the trades more strongly, 45 percent said they just don’t know enough about it.
  • 81 percent of students said they feel some level of pressure to attend college, which comes from a variety of sources including parents and teachers
  • When it comes to job qualities they want, students indicated things like feeling independent, not sitting in a desk all day, and having job security—many of which align with what a job in the trades can provide.

Wolverine will continue to build Team Wolverine and advocate for the trades in 2019. To learn more about current team members and how you can join, visit Wolverine.com/ProjectBootstrap.
