Wolverine 1000 Mile owner Mr. Nick Schonberger describes some of the high points in the first six months of his brown Wolverine 1000 Mile boots.
This past weekend, my Wolverine boots and I stormed the court at Gampel Pavilion and high-fived Stanley Robinson.
The 25-yard skip from seat to celebration marked the Huskies victory
over the Texas Longhorns; the short trip also brought the rough milage
on the boots up to 482. Racked over varied terrain - in part through
the streets of London, the Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail, and a snow covered
District of Columbia - the miles have come in the balanced course of
everyday life. Since purchase my Wolverines and I have attended twenty
college and pro basketball games, two Premiership fixtures, and one
wedding. They’ve visited twelve museums, six auction previews, and one
gambling den (well, the betting center at Churchill Downs).
Additionally, the boots have peddled some 35 miles on several local
Philadelphia coffee runs.
Few of the many steps taken to reach
this milage have been missteps (and those came over rain soaked
cobblestone... which taught a valuable lesson in the occasional danger
of leather soled shoes). For a guy who has spent much of adult life
ardently avoiding “real” shoes, the 1000 Mile boots are something of a
revelation. First and foremost, they prove the absurdity of marketing
based on “advanced cushioning” and “innovative support.” From now on, I
will take things the old fashioned way - Goodyear Welted, and with a
heel - as there is something quite natural about the simple set up.
Wolverine,
as anyone reading this site will probably know, was founded in 1883.
That’s 107 years before I was born. The company and I have only one
thing in common, both being Michigan natives. In 1914, Wolverine
introduced the “1000 Mile” shoes. When I was 21 I introduced a hearty
diet of 30 daily PBRs to my routine. For quick comparision’s sake the
obvious success edge at like age goes to Wolverine.
The edge in
sustainability also, then, goes to Wolverine. It is unlikely that in
1914 the folks who brewed up the 1000 Mile boot would have imagined its
usefulness almost 100 years later. However, given both timeless
aesthetic and commitment to traditional manufacturing techniques,
Wolverine managed to dream up something that is 2010 contemporary
during what some American’s might consider “olden times.”
Men in
those days might have been more rugged. The average boot wearer
certainly more rugged than a guy who spends most days tapping at a Mac
Book (i.e. me). And, you can say what you will about heritage trend and
workwear fetish, the end story is less complicated - when things work,
they work.
And, in my case, when they work for basketball games,
and they work for museums, then they are likely to find themselves
walking 1000 miles. Or more.

The fellas over at Hypebeast recently spotlighted one of the new 1000 Mile retailers, UNIONMADE in San Francisco. The shop and its owner Mr. Todd Barket just opened up a few months ago and have already received much praise and buzz. On offer at the shop are the Wolverine 1000 Mile Montgomery boot as well as the Darby boot. If you are in San Francisco stop by UNIONMADE and check the place out for yourself.
