For Jimmie Bones, keyboardist for Kid Rock and the Twisted Brown Trucker Band, Wolverine has long been part of his family history. He was kind enough to share these photos, the first of his Great Uncle Ed wearing a pair Wolverine shell boots on the farm in the 1930s, and the second of young Jimmie sporting a pair of Wolverine farm boots that he grew up in. He keeps the tradition alive by rocking out in Wolverine’s while on tour with Kid Rock. Big thank you to Jimmie for sharing all of this with us!

The brand’s funding is vital to The Wolverine Foundation and supports continued research projects and awareness programs.

“The primary goal of The Wolverine Foundation is to elevate the wolverine’s management status through public information, and we recognize the need for coordinated, science-based efforts including the support and initiation of research,” said Jeff Copeland, who co-founded The Wolverine Foundation in 1996. “Wolverine Brand’s donation is instrumental in working toward this goal and helps us provide grants to many meaningful wolverine research projects around the country.”

Mr. Copeland’s background includes more than 20 years of wolverine research. Along with The Wolverine Foundation, he is a collaborator on the Central Idaho Wolverine and Winter Recreation Research Study that aims to better understand the interactions between wolverines and humans. With the help and support of recreationists throughout the state of Idaho, a team of researchers and a number of wolverines fitted with GPS collars, the project aims to track and evaluate the relationship between wolverine and human activity.

“We are honored to be associated with The Wolverine Foundation, which leads the charge on many valuable research projects and awareness programs,” said Kelly Redinger, Marketing Director for Wolverine. “The Wolverine Foundation is a natural fit for the brand as we strive to embody the tenacious, relentless spirit of the wolverine to create boots that perform in the harshest conditions.”

Sporting Chef cooks up fresh, game-inspired cuisine at 2013 SHOT Show

Rockford, Mich. (Jan. 9, 2013) – HuntFishCook’s Sporting Chef, Scott Leysath, will serve up fresh game-inspired cuisine on Jan. 15 and 16 during the 2013 Shooting, Hunting Outdoor Tradeshow. Leysath, one of the top wild game chefs in the U.S., will offer his own brand of Short Attention Span Cooking each day. THE 29TH ANNUAL WOLVERINE RESOLUTION RUN SET FOR DECEMBER 31
Four mile New Year’s Eve race raises money for local kids with life-threatening illnesses

ROCKFORD, Mich. (Dec. 27, 2012) – The 29th annual Wolverine® Resolution Run is set for New Year’s Eve, Monday Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. in East Grand Rapids. The four mile run/walk around Reeds Lake will support Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Oncology Resource Team (P.O.R.T.) and is sponsored by Wolverine, the authentic boot and clothing brand.

P.O.R.T. is a program of the children’s hospital that supports families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening diseases. From care bags for unexpected hospital stays, to super sibs clubs for siblings of diagnosed children and support groups for their parents, P.O.R.T. helps families in the most difficult situations.

“Learning that your child has a life-threatening condition is a heart-wrenching moment,” said Colleen Thompson, P.O.R.T. program coordinator. “During the non-stop treatments and appointments that immediately follow diagnosis, we help families with basic needs so that they can completely focus on their child.”

Race entrants are asked to donate $5 to P.O.R.T. with their entry fee, which Wolverine matches dollar for dollar. Every entrant who donates at least $5 to P.O.R.T. will be entered into the Charity Challenge drawing; the grand prize winner will receive an airline ticket to anywhere in the continental United States. Numerous other door prizes and giveaways also will be part of the drawing. An awards presentation at Bob’s Pizza (661 Croswell Ave. SE, Grand Rapids) will follow the race.

“The Resolution Run brings attention to and supports P.O.R.T, a program that provides irreplaceable services to families in our community when they need it most,” said Kelly Redinger, marketing director for Wolverine. “We hope the community gives generously to this deserving organization, and Wolverine pledges to match all Resolution Run donations to P.O.R.T. dollar for dollar.”

Online registration is available for $28 (including a $5 donation to P.O.R.T.) until Dec. 28 at classicrace.com, and all registrants will receive a 2012 Resolution Run T-shirt. From Dec. 29 -30, registration is $30 (including a $5 donation to P.O.R.T.). Registration will be held Sunday, Dec. 30 at Gazelle Sports (3930 28th Street SE, Grand Rapids) and the Rockford Footwear Depot (235 N. Main St., Rockford) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Race day registration will be available at the East Grand Rapids High School gymnasium (2211 Lake Dr., Grand Rapids) from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

In honor of the launch of the Limited Edition 744 LTD shell cordovan boot, Wolverine 1000 Mile is hosting global launch events at participating retailers around the world. With this very special addition to the 1000 Mile collection, Wolverine is returning to their archives to reproduce a boot that was initially introduced in the 1920s.

Only 1000 pairs of the 744 LTD boot were produced, each made in the USA of Horween® shell cordovan leather (Cordovan No. 449) using the same, authentic production techniques as the original 1000 Mile Boot. The boots are hand-numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity as well as Wolverine 1000 Mile wood shoe trees. Cities across the world will mark the unveiling of this style with special events at select Wolverine 1000 Mile retailers.

Leffot in New York, Haberdash in Chicago, Wingtip in San Francisco and The Stronghold in Venice, CA will be hosting events today, Thursday September 20th. Anyone who purchases a pair of boots in store on this special day will receive a wallet coordinated to the 744 LTD boot made from Horween Essex leather.

A week from today, Wolverine will make a special addition to the 1000 Mile collection with a limited edition vintage-reissue style. The 744 LTD (so-called to reference the archival pattern it resembles) uses the same, time-tested construction methods as the Original 1000 Mile Boot. Made in the USA, this brand new style is produced in Horween® shell cordovan leather, which requires six months to produce.

Only 1,000 pairs of the 744 LTD boot will be made available at select retailers around the world. Each boot bears a certificate of authenticity and is hand-marked with its production number. The exact look of the shoe is being kept under wraps until the official global launch on September 20. Wolverine Opens First Pop-Up Company Store in New York's Nolita

NEW YORK, NY (September 2012): Wolverine, the maker of dependably rugged boots since 1883, has opened a new pop-up shop at 242 Elizabeth Street in New York. The store, which will stay in place until late February of 2013, offers a curated selection of goods that share the Wolverine commitment to quality, heritage and craftsmanship. In addition to the full men’s and women’s collections of Wolverine 1000 Mile and Wolverine No. 1883 (including the brand’s collaborations with Samantha Pleet and Filson), the store will showcase items from other brands including Filson, Tellason denim, Samantha Pleet, Left Field NYC, Tanner Goods and David Hart & Co., alongside a selection of jewelry from The Shiny Squirrel and vintage from BKLYN Dry Goods.

“Wolverine has a more than 125-year-history of making the best boots around,” said Ted Gedra, President of Wolverine. “This pop-up shop tells our story -- from the wood beams used in our first tannery in Rockford to the Original 1000 Mile Boot, the store embodies Wolverine’s built-to-last spirit. By partnering with other like-minded brands, we’ve created a place where people can expect unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship.”The Wolverine Company Store was fabricated using reclaimed wood from the original Wolverine tannery in Rockford, Michigan. Other unique features include salvaged light fixtures and a wall decorated with 170 authentic boot lasts. BKLYN Dry Goods aided in the curation and decoration of the space.

“With our own pop-ups, we wanted people to leave thinking they'd just visited a space that'd been there for years -- and would stick around for many more,” said Jahn Hall of BKLYN Dry Goods. “Wolverine is a brand that's been around for well over a century -- and will be around for many years to come. We are honored that a 100+ year-old American brand put their trust in us to design and build their first retail space in New York City.”

This pop-up company store is designed to showcase the Wolverine story and educate consumers on the history of this classic American shoe maker. Throughout the store’s six-month existence, Wolverine will host an array of events and parties to celebrate their first stand-alone presence in the Big Apple. The official kick-off begins at the September 18th Grand Opening event. DJ Lucas Walters will be spinning tunes while guests sip Founders Brewing Co. beer and Artesian Distillery’s spirits, both from Wolverine’s home state of Michigan. All are invited to join Wolverine from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on this special night, and will have the opportunity to win exclusive giveaways from the store.

In 1998 Left Field was created in a time when American-made clothing was unheard of. Growing up, founder Christian McCann used to frequent antique flea markets and became obsessed with the craftsmanship and detail of things from the past. There was a need to bridge the gap between what used to be handcrafted and what was being mass produced now. Left Field grew out of small shotgun apartments and lofts throughout Brooklyn. The Wolverine 1000 Mile Collection and Filson are proud to introduce a new collaboration for Fall 2012. Featuring two new boot styles, the partnership brings together Filson and Wolverine’s authentic outdoor heritages.

“Filson and Wolverine share a similar history of finely crafted products, having served hard-working, rugged outdoorsmen for more than a century,” said Christina Vernon, manager of Wolverine’s heritage product lines. “Filson’s motto of ‘what works then, still works now’ meshes perfectly with Wolverine’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship techniques, quality materials and appreciation for what works.”

The 6-inch Emerson boot and the 8-inch Rowan boot feature durable Horween leather accented with Filson heavy cotton twill. Both boots have moc-toe detail, timeless silhouettes and are made in the USA. Goodyear Welt construction and a flexible wedge outsole make the boots as comfortable as they are classic. The Emerson is available in rust, while the taller Rowan boot is available in brown with lighter twill side panels.

The wolverine is real, and it's not a baby wolf

Half-way through their journey, the Ramblers Bone guys made a stop in Jackson, Wyoming, late last week to meet up with our friends at the Wolverine Foundation. Back in Rockford we had the chance to talk with Jeff Copeland, founding director of The Wolverine Foundation, as he traveled to his next research location. With more than 20 years of research under his belt, Copeland knows a thing or two about the wolverine and was generous enough to share some insight on this mysterious animal with us.

You have dedicated your life to researching the wolverine – what motivates you?
Introducing folks to the animal. There is an amazing amount of misunderstanding of what the wolverine is – that it’s just a mythical creature or a “baby wolf.” We start from the basic position that the wolverine is a real and rare animal. We try to develop an understanding of what the wolverine is – the more we know about the wolverine the more we can come to appreciate it.

Why is the wolverine so misunderstood?
The reason we know so little about the wolverine is because it’s an animal that doesn’t have any need to associate with humans. Most species that we know a lot about we have regular interactions with; wolves eating livestock, hunting as sport, bird watching, et cetera. We develop our associations with animals based on our interactions with them.

The wolverine is an alpine weasel that lives at high altitudes in extremely cold conditions and deep snow. Historically, these are places where humans couldn’t and wouldn’t want to go, especially in winter. And the wolverine doesn’t live there because we forced them to; it’s adapted to live there. The wolverine also has a very low density population even in high population areas.

Most of what we thought we knew about the wolverine came from North Country trappers, which focused on their tenacity, ferocity, cunning and durability, which also fit with the descriptions of the wolverine in myths and legends.

Has anything changed concerning the wolverine in recent years?
In recent years, with the gain in popularity of extreme winter sports like heli-sking, backcountry skiing and snowmobiling, people have begun to play in wolverine habitat even in the winter. These formerly remote areas are no longer truly remote, which is cause for concern about the potential effects of human presence on wolverines.

How is this interaction part of the Wolverine Foundation’s current project, the Central Idaho Wolverine and Winter Recreation Research Study?
This project is the first attempt to address the issue and come up with an understanding of the interaction between wolverines and humans.

Female wolverines move to reproductive dens in late February, which are located at high elevation under deep snow that insulates the offspring from the cold and hides them from predators. In these dens, the female wolverine will have two or three kits that will remain in the den for 9-10 weeks. During this time, wolverines may be sensitive to human presence or direct disturbance, which may result in den abandonment or displacement from important habit but how a wolverine responds to human presence is not well understood.

We’ve asked recreationists to carry small GPS units to record their winter movements, and a team of researchers is live-trapping wolverines to fit them with GPS collars. From this, we hope to gather a large enough sample of tracks to help us evaluate the relationship between wolverine and human activity.

What is most exciting about this project? What implications will it have?
What we’re most excited about is that we’ve been able to team up with recreationists right from the beginning and they’ve been very supportive of the project. There is no pretentious atmosphere; we both care about the land and want to have good sound science to understand the relationship between humans and wolverines.

As far as implications, we need a large sample size before we generalize across the population. We need to sample enough of the population to make a broad statement, and because wolverines live in such remote areas and there are so few of them, it’s difficult to get a good sample. This is the fourth year of field research for the project, and we’d really like to another four or five years so we can determine consistent trends in the way humans and wolverines interact.

Wolverine has been designing and making boots since 1883. While we understand all that goes into making a great, comfortable pair of boots we also realize most people aren’t familiar with the day-to-day processes that bring a work boot to life. So we created a video series called “American Tradition” to give you behind-the-scenes look at Wolverine.

“Paper to Product” is the first video in the series, which uncovers our process for developing a work boot, from the initial design concept to testing of the final product. TV host and licensed contractor, Jason Cameron, recently visited our company headquarters in Rockford, MI and to meet the folks at Wolverine and discover how our boots are made.
